Reading

At George Hastwell School we use Twinkl Phonics for our pupils who need a systematic, synthetic phonics programme approach to support their reading. These pupils use the Rhino Readers reading scheme which is a collection of fully decodable books that is exactly aligned with Twinkl Phonics. The reading scheme starts at Level 2, progressing through to Level 6 as children increase their phonological knowledge. The aim of the scheme is for children to fluently read the books as they contain previously learnt phonemes and tricky words. As a result, children can read more fluently and build their confidence to prevent the need to decode words and increasing children’s ability to become independent readers. Rhino Readers offer a broad range of stories, including: non- fiction, fiction, poems and play scripts, with colourful eye catching illustrations to promote lifelong love for reading, resulting in children reading for pleasure. The Rhino Reading scheme has also enabled us to align other reading schemes we have previously used to ensure our pupils have access to a wide selection of books.
