Curriculum Pathway Overview
George Hastwell School’s provision is organised into four phases: EYFS, Main, MSI and Post-16. Across these phases, pupils access one of three curriculum pathways: Pre-Formal, Semi-Formal Explore or Semi-Formal Engage. The pathways provide a graduated approach to curriculum and support, enabling learning to be personalised according to individual need, developmental profile, communication, engagement and readiness. Pupils may move between pathways as their needs, skills and independence develop, while progression between phases reflects their age and stage of education.
The staff use a highly personalised approach to teaching, where EHCPs act as the gateway to pupils’ learning and underpin curriculum pathway design. Each pupil’s curriculum is carefully aligned to their EHCP outcomes, ensuring that learning is purposeful, relevant and directly linked to their individual needs, including communication, cognition and independence.
