Reading

At George Hastwell, we recognise that every pupil learns to read in their own way and at their own pace. Our reading curriculum is carefully adapted to meet individual needs, helping pupils develop confidence, communication and a lifelong love of reading. We use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics scheme to provide a structured and consistent approach to developing phonics knowledge and early reading skills.

This is complemented by our Core Word Programme, which supports pupils to recognise and use high-frequency words that are important for communication and everyday life, and the See and Learn Sight Reading Programme, which provides a visual and highly structured approach to developing sight-word recognition.

Alongside phonics and reading, pupils develop functional literacy skills, enabling them to apply their reading and communication skills in meaningful, real-life situations such as following instructions, reading signs, shopping lists, timetables and personal information. Through personalised teaching, repetition and practical opportunities, we aim to ensure that every pupil makes progress and experiences success as a reader.
