Pupils in Orca Class follow the Semi-Formal Engage pathway, where learning is carefully personalised to support each young person’s strengths, needs and interests, while also providing appropriate challenge and opportunities to grow.

We work closely with pupils and their families to create an individual learning programme that reflects personal goals and future ambitions. This partnership approach helps ensure every learner feels supported, valued and well prepared for their next steps into adulthood.

Learning in Orca Class blends classroom-based teaching with practical, hands-on experiences, enabling pupils to apply their skills in real-life contexts. Work-related learning is a key focus and is developed through weekly enterprise projects, group and individual work experience placements, and visits to careers fairs and local employers. Regular educational visits within the local community further support pupils to practise independence, communication and teamwork. Each year, pupils also take part in an annual residential visit, offering valuable opportunities to build confidence, resilience and independence while reinforcing the skills they have developed in school.

Pupils develop essential skills in Functional Skills English and Maths, helping them to communicate effectively, build confidence and manage everyday situations. Learners also have the opportunity to work towards a range of recognised external qualifications, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award and ASDAN Towards Independence, supporting personal development, independence and life skills.
